Perry is a Chicago native, birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. However, her parents did not want her to pursue acting until she became older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry says she didn't want to be an actor in highschool but decided to start performing as a form of social interaction during her time at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry was able to land small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. The feeling of homelessness, however, brought her to California again where she began working on stage. Perry was a part of Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was performed in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC show Scandal. Also, she was cast on The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The role was selected through an audition, even the fact that she had a deep connection with it.
